Following the Biz: Three sites and a newsletter worth watching

Sorting through the classical music biz noise on the Internet is not easy, but I do have a few bookmarks — and an e-mail subscription — that are well worth integrating into your routine.

If you haven’t discovered InstantEncore.com by now, you should. It’s a hub for classical concert and music buzz and has largely (as intended) been co-opted by artists, publicists, and indie biz players. And it’s free.

Musical America, on the other hand, isn’t — and at $135/year some may see it as a luxury — but it’s the best source for news on the American classical music scene and has solid coverage of global developments.

There’s a bit less news on Gramophone magazine’s news page, and the coverage can be uneven, but the stories are unfailingly concise, complete, and informative. And they’re free.

I’m on innumerable music biz e-mailing lists, mostly those of publicists and artists, but one of the best is French Classical Time, recently initiated by bureauexport‘s Morgane Krikorian. It’s packed with buzzworthy concert, artist, recording, and business links. Here’s a look at the latest edition. Both the RIAA and NARAS could learn a few things about reaching classical consumers, performers, and professionals by following this model (hint hint). Drop bureauexport an e-mail and tell them you’d like to subscribe.
